Frequently asked questions

Questions about my Driving Lessons in Swanwick

Frequently asked questions

How Long?

Q. How many hours does it take to pass the driving test?

A. This will vary from pupil to pupil, however the DSA recommends an average of 45 hours' tuition with an additional 22 hours' practise.

Q. What is the percentage of people who pass 1st time?

A. Across the UK the average is about 10% of people who pass first time.

Q. What does the Intensive Course involve?

A. The Intensive Course is 30 hours of lessons, plus the driving test, together with the driving skills workbook included.

Q. My dad says it didn't take him 40 hours to pass his test and he passed first time! Is he right?

A. The driving test is very different now to how it was in years gone by! Whilst every pupil is an individual, some may be ready to pass their test sooner than others, a higher level of proficiency is needed today to be a safe new driver and today's driving test reflects this.

Q. What is show and tell?

A. It's a demonstration and explanation way of teaching. For example to answer the question 'where is the windscreen washer reservoir'? I would show you where the reservoir is and explain how to check the level and fill it up.

Test and License

Q. Do you book the test or do I?

A. Either of us can book the test by phoning the DSA or visiting their web site. I am more than happy to do this for you if you wish.

Q. Do I need a provisional driving license before I can get started ?

A. Yes, you will need to apply to the DVLA and obtain a provisional driving license before you can start taking lessons on public roads. I can supply you with all the forms you need to apply for one.

Q. Do I need to pass the theory test first before I can learn to drive?

A. You need to pass your theory test before you can book your driving test, however it doesn't prevent you from learning to drive.

Pass Plus

Q. What is Pass Plus? How does it help me?

A. Pass Plus is 6 hours of extra tuition including motorway driving. It can reduce your car insurance by up to 10% and will make you a safer driver.
